Why does my printer's head move the entire width of the machine?

Almost all Mutoh printers have an option called CR movement. This setting controls how far the carriage moves on each pass. This can be set to data width (default) or mechanical width.

As the name implies, data width only moves the carriage as far as the limit of the data being printed. This increases the speed of the printer, particularly if most of your jobs are smaller than the machine's actual width.

Mechanical width moves the carriage the full, maximum length of the carriage rail. We rarely recommend enabling this option as the print speed is dramatically decreased, but it may be useful in certain cases such as when you need to give the ink additional time to dry. If even more time is necessary, there is also a delay function that causes the head carriage to pause at the end of each pass.

While these options can be chosen from the front panel of the machine, we typically recommend setting them in the RIP software since the RIP will almost always override the machine setting for this option.

DIRECTIONS

  • In Wasatch SoftRIP, go to Print Setup for your unit; next to Imaging Configuration, click the Edit button; then click Properties. The carriage movement option should be on that first screen.
  • On the ValueJet printers, press the Menu key > Setup > CR Movement and Overwrite Wait.
  • On the Toucan LT, press Menu Down > Settings > CR Movement
